Ever been told to behave in church? Following Jesus sometimes means upsetting the tables.

Going into the Temple he began to throw out everyone who had set up shop, selling everything and anything. He said, “It’s written in Scripture,

   My house is a house of prayer;
   You have turned it into a religious bazaar.”

From then on he taught each day in the Temple. The high priests, religion scholars, and the leaders of the people were trying their best to find a way to get rid of him. But with the people hanging on every word he spoke, they couldn’t come up with anything. Luke 19:45-48 (The Message)

The priority of Jesus is spiritual life not religious institutions. For some folk keeping the material life and appearances takes priority over seeking spiritual life in Christ. Gentle Jesus meek and mild becomes furious Jesus angry and outspoken when faced with such spiritual abuse in the name of God. Jesus is the embodiment of God’s grace and spiritual power. Belonging and believing is not a matter of behaving in religious conformity for those who follow him. Living in a Christ like manner means not standing by quietly but speaking up righteously when seeing injustice in the temple as well as the town hall.

Lord Jesus let your righeous anger at injustice empower me to speak out. When I see wrong let me be table turner through your love and power. Amen.
