A  message for his time and our time comes in God’s Message to Joel son of Pethuel:

Attention, elder statesmen! Listen closely, everyone, whoever and wherever you are! Have you ever heard of anything like this?  Has anything like this ever happened before—ever? Make sure you tell your children, and your children tell their children, And their children their children. Don’t let this message die out. Joel 1:1-3 (The Message)

Does it ever seem as if no one is listening to anyone anymore? Our society doesn’t seem to want to learn from the lessons of the past but just carry on regardless. Young people don’t take notice and older people don’t think the young have the experience to have a voice. We see a world on our door steps in turmoil and we don’t seem able to fix it! Why? well I would suggest that God’s message to Joel has a lot to say. First, of all it says this, ‘listen to the lessons of the past, why? because it may save you from disasters in the future.’ Are we willing to listen to the voice of experience and is the voice of experience will to listen to the concerns of youth? If we were then there is a lot to be said in the cause of co-operation and co-existence that will secure the present and deliver the future for future generations.

Lord, let me be a listener and let me be a co-operator. If I will only see the value you have placed in others, both those who have lived a full life of experience and those who are just beginning on the journey, then I may be able to truly see the future delivered for future generations. Amen.
