Do we expect God to fight for us?

Announce this to the godless nations:  Prepare for battle! Soldiers at attention!  Present arms! Advance! Turn your shovels into swords, turn your hoes into spears. Let the weak one throw out his chest and say, “I’m tough, I’m a fighter.” Hurry up, pagans! Wherever you are, get a move on!  Get your act together. Prepare to be shattered by God! Joel 3:9-11 (The Message)

When we have returned to God, when we live and actively repentant life, then God is moving on our side. When we are looking for the will of God to be made evident in our lives then God is fighting on our behalf. The problem is that too often, in the face of crisis or calamity, we don’t ‘see’ it so we have difficulty believing it. God gives clear warning to our enemies though, those things or situations in life that obstruct his will. He says they are to prepare, prepare for what, prepare for a fight and perpare to be defeated. Or, to quote the thing from the Marvel comic’s  ‘The Fantastic Four’, ‘Its clobberin time!’ Just as assured the enemies of justice are going to be clobbered, the enemies of God, those things in our lives that obstruct the fulness of life he brings, are going to be shattered. When we turn, and keep turning to God, the things of the old life in Adam are due for a ‘clobberin’ by the captain of our lives Jesus Christ.

Jesus, let your will to overcome everything in my life that creates spiritual obstacles to the fulness of life be ‘clobbered’ today. Help me to believe that, although I may not see it now, you are calling them to prepare to be shattered and let me be prepared to let them be shattered. Amen.
