Is life today like it was at the birth of the church?

He went on in this vein for a long time, urging them over and over, “Get out while you can; get out of this sick and stupid culture!” That day about three thousand took him at his word, were baptized and were signed up. They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers. Acts 2:40-42 (The Message)

There is lots that can be said to be good today, but the basic nature of our culture isn’t so different than it was then. People sought their own profit to the detriment of others and violence and abuse was every where. Not so different from today then!

Peter urges people to get out while they can and three thousand saw the sense in it. But what did they flee to? After baptism ‘They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers.’ A simple way of life that sought the wisdom of the teaching of Christ passed on through his apostles, fellowship with other believers, sharing what they had in way of food and material things, and to praying. We could do worse than seek this simplicity for ourselves! Christianity can get as complicated as the worldliness it rejects, but grasping the need to be discipled by the Word of God and to share in community and prayer is at the heart of all moves of the Holy Spirit. Seeking life together through the Word and in the Holy Spirit is at the heart of what we are called to do as followers of Jesus. Here is where the journey of faith begins and finds its meaning.

Lord, today help me to rely on your Word to give me strength to follow and to take part in life together with others so that your life will be known in me. Amen.
