What do we mean when we say ‘That was awesome!’?

Everyone around was in awe—all those wonders and signs done through the apostles! And all the believers lived in a wonderful harmony, holding everything in common. They sold whatever they owned and pooled their resources so that each person’s need was met. Acts 2:43-45 (The Message)

A friend of mine blogged yesterday, ‘It seems as if every Christian event I go to there is more worship …’ She wasn’t being critical just observing the fact that we seem to think that we experience the awe of God through singing songs in big groups today. I think this is a mistake. Not that worship events are a bad thing but that our focus on the awesomeness of God seems to be being replaced by a concert Christianity. You didn’t get this kind of dependence on sung worship in the apostle’s day. People were in awe of the wonders and signs done through them because they were marvellously used by God in the mission of his kingdom. The believers lived in harmony because they experience the power of God among them and no one placed their own material need above another’s. Now that is church and that is Christian community, power and love in harmony!

Lord Jesus, show me how to live today with power and love in harmony. Let your people live together your way, with power and love in harmony. Amen.
